Group Problem Solving – Tips For Leading Your Team
So, you’re a new manager and you’ve been put in charge of a planning team that has never worked together before. Your task is to find a solution to a business problem. You need a process to perform systematic problem solving. What can you do to get your group moving quickly and completely to meet this challenge?
Do not worry. By relying on natural problem-solving logic, you will be able to harness the natural reasoning skills of your group members to come up with an effective solution. Your job as a manager is to make sure you have a fundamentally sound problem-solving process that incorporates the different types of thinking you’ll find on your team.
Psychologist David Kolb has identified four major steps in natural problem solving. be sure to address each of these points in your group:
1.Analysis of the situation: to focus on What is the most important problem?
2. Analysis of the problem: to focus on What are the causes of the problem?
3. Analysis of solutions: to focus on What is the best solution ?
4. implementation analysis: to focus on How do we implement the solution?
In each of these four phases, you should use both divergent and convergent thinking to ensure that you have considered all angles of the problem before moving on to the next phase.
divergent thoughts is used to block your research from different viewpoints and multiple ways of knowing. You can think of this as the brainstorming part of this phase where people are free to think in a way that feels natural and comfortable to them.
convergent thinking, on the other hand, is used in order to bring the group back to the center where we can discuss and debate and except a group solution in order to move on to the next phase.
Your job as the manager responsible for this planning team is to coordinate these two different styles of thinking in each of these four phases and ensure that everyone’s concerns are heard and then resolved before moving on to the next phase.
Keeping good notes and tracking where you are in the process will ensure you leverage the power of natural human reasoning and an effective group process to solve your business planning problems.
Good luck!
