Can your unique learner improve their learning skills?

Yes! In fact, it’s easier and more fun than you might think. You can enhance your child’s readiness to learn in a game-like way.

Let’s start with a better understanding of readiness to learn. It’s not about how quickly they can complete a timed math quiz, or how well they print. Readiness to learn occurs once fundamental developmental skills are in place.

Students who are ready to learn know how to process and make sense of the information around them. They know how to recognize patterns. They may consider different explanations before selecting the most likely one. This type of problem solving must occur when performing arithmetic, reading, and writing. However, these skills first develop outside of the classroom.

You can’t accomplish this with more math worksheets or printing practice. How can you help your unique learner improve their readiness to learn? The answer might surprise you.

Readiness to learn only happens when the building blocks of development fall into place. If your unique learner has developmental gaps, don’t despair. These gaps can be filled with activities that resemble games.

Here are three ways you can use play to improve your unique learner’s readiness to learn.

The first area to focus on is improving your child’s ability to practice “try one more” strategies.

Start by stretching your child’s attention span by getting them to “hang on” a little longer. Play with that toy a little longer, work on that tricky puzzle just a moment longer, read a little longer, and encourage them to “stick to” the chore you assigned them, just a little longer. little longer.

Balance and movement

The ability to physically experience the world around us relies on the sensory system to perceive movement in relation to the space around us. This sensory system is the vestibular system. The vestibular system provides our brain with a strong urge to maintain balance.

Our need for balance alerts the muscular and articular system. This system has its own set of receptors, called proprioceptors. The proprioceptive system allows the body to react gently to different shifts in the center of gravity.

Most physical activities require the integration of the vestibular system with the proprioceptive system.

When these systems work together well, a student is ready to learn.

For many unique learners, these systems do not work properly. This is a big reason for their academic struggle. It affects the ability to sit in a learning position. This impacts the student’s ability to watch and listen. This distracts their focus on a subconscious level as their brain pays attention to information from the vestibular system that indicates the student might fall out of the chair. These are just three of the hundreds of ways these systems affect readiness to learn.

Movement, exercise, sports, martial arts, yoga, dance, and juggling all provide excellent opportunities for the movement and balance systems to stimulate and help facilitate brain function.

You can support the growth of your unique learner by incorporating movement into the fuel needed for brain growth. A more typical student may seem to respond well to practice, practice, practice. A unique learner seems to respond better to practice, movement, practice, movement.

The more you play “strategically” with your unique learner, the more improvement you will see in their readiness to learn.
