What is supersaturation?

A definition:

First imagine you create a solution by dissolving a material in a solvent, “the term supersaturation refers to a solution that contains more dissolved material than could be dissolved by the solvent under normal circumstances” this definition is from en.wikipedia. org

Usually, supersaturation is achieved by heating an already saturated solution allowing more material to dissolve, then allowing the solution to cool. The resulting solution is supersaturated.

These supersaturated solutions are very unstable; any impulse will cause them to recrystallize because, as supersaturation implies, they contain more solute than can normally be dissolved. An explanation from www.math.mtu.edu

Simply put, the supersaturated solution will crystallize very quickly once a “seed crystal” is created. The seed crystal can sometimes be created simply by shaking the solution or even scraping the container!
