How I Passed the CSET….Little Tips and Pointers That Made the Difference Between Pass and Failure

The CSET – Your path to a rewarding career!

Few careers can offer the levels of responsibility, satisfaction, and fulfillment that teaching brings to California educators. Every day, thousands of teachers across California help their students study, learn, and achieve their dreams.

Good teachers create good lives

Teachers can touch lives in ways no one else can. Everyone remembers at least one teacher who encouraged and inspired them, with the help and guidance they needed when they needed it most.

You are one small step away from becoming such a teacher.

Good teachers also lead good lives

But teachers don’t just inspire and educate. As a teacher, you will enjoy the respect of family and friends, and a social status granted to few other professionals. You’ll have long paid vacations that allow you to travel the world or pursue your own goals. And you’ll have an income that will bring you independence and a career path that can take you from challenge to success.

All that stands between you and a rewarding career of educating, guiding and inspiring students right now is your CSET test.

Pass the CSET exam, pass your knowledge on the CSET test

The CSET exam is a series of single-subject tests intended to prove to the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing that you have the basic knowledge of the CSET test and the ability to teach your subject in a classroom setting. There is also a multi-subject CSET exam that is required for K-8 certification.

With hard work and, no less important, the right preparation for the CSET test, you should find it easy to pass the CSET and start your teaching career.

What you need to know about the CSET

Whatever subject you intend to teach, you will find that passing the CSET test will require you to use two sets of skills: recall the CSET knowledge you have about your subject; and answer exam questions quickly and accurately.

Both sets of skills are vitally important to CSET.

    What is CSET?

The CSET is a single-subject exam, intended to replace the older Single Subject Assessments for Teaching and Praxis II tests. There are three types of tests in the CSET:

Teaching titles for a single subject are primarily used in grades 7-12 and authorize a teacher to teach a particular subject.

Teaching qualifications in several subjects allow teachers to teach a range of different subjects and are typically used in elementary schools from kindergarten to grade 6.

Education Specialist Instruction Diplomas enable teachers to teach students who have special disabilities or special needs from kindergarten to grade 12.

Each CSET exam contains a number of subtests and lasts up to five hours. However, the subtests themselves are untimed, allowing you to spend more time on the areas you find difficult and less time on the parts you know best.

Time management will be an important part of getting the score you need to pass the CSET exam and become a teacher.

Two types of questions, two types of challenges

CSET exam questions come in two forms: Multiple choice questions asking you to choose the best answer from a number of options. In these questions, it is important to remember that the better the answer is not necessarily the only one to correct reply. You may find that two CSET exam answers look correct, but one answer will more correct that the other. (It also means that when two answers are alike, you have a 50/50 chance of guessing the correct one.)

CSET constructed-response questions ask you to discuss, describe, analyze, explain, etc. Often you will be asked to complete more than one task. Always read the question carefully and make sure you have completed all the tasks.

Preparing for the CSET test – How to cram quickly and efficiently

Whatever your topic, the CSET exam will expect you to have memorized large amounts of information. You are familiar with some of this CSET information because you use it every day. But much of the detail that will emerge on the exam will be the kind of knowledge that would normally require you to turn to books for the answers.

In the CSET, you will need to be able to recall these facts from memory. It means being able to cram.

Best Methods to Complete CSET Test Prep Quickly

At some point, just about everyone finds themselves having to prepare for an exam. It may not be the best way to learn, but it’s often the only way to pass the test.

There are a number of effective techniques you can use to fill your head with the information you need to pass your CSET exam quickly.

    1. Organize your priorities

No one excels at everything. Inevitably, there will be some areas where you will be stronger and others where you will be weaker. You will need to make sure that you spend more time memorizing and learning your weak points than your strong points for the CSET.

Don’t worry if there seems to be a huge difference between the amount of work you have to do and the time you have to do it. The next step will be to reduce the work and preparation needed to pass the CSET.

    2. Choose and store for the CSET

Once you have identified the areas that will need the most work, read all of the information once. Highlight the most important points (don’t just underline: it’s easier to imagine a highlighted page than an underlined sentence).

There are a number of different methods you can then use to store your CSET exam information in your head:

oh To break up what you need to learn in small chunks. There’s a limit to how much you can store in your short-term memory at one time. Take each piece a little at a time.

oh Acrostics help you remember a list in the correct order by turning them into weird sentences. My dear Aunt Sally is the famous way to remember to multiply and divide before adding and subtracting. You can create your own acrostic for any set of facts on the CSET.

    oh Turn your CSET notes into musical notes. If you can put the words you’re trying to memorize to a tune you like, you’ll find them much easier to remember. You might not be able to hum during the exam, but you can sing in the shower – and in the process, keep memorizing for the CSET;

    3. Get the CSET pressed right in there!

Cramming only puts the information you want in your head for a short time (using what you memorize will retain it in the long run). In order to keep what you have memorized from falling out before your CSET exam, you will need to keep viewing and going through it until you need it on the day.

    Support the CSET

The actual content of your exam will depend on the subject you plan to teach. The official CSET study guides will tell you what you are expected to know before entering the CSET exam hall. You should definitely be familiar with the CSET guides that apply to you.

What the CSET study guides won’t tell you is how to pass the CSET when you’re not sure of the answer. It’s not because you can’t; it’s because they don’t want you to know how to do it.

Here are 5 ways to pass the CSET (even if you don’t know the answer)

    1. Answer the easy questions first

Use the first few minutes of the exam to skim the paper. You will certainly find some of the questions easier than others. Do them right away. This will make you feel a little better and give you more time for the tough questions. And if you get stuck on a question, make a mark, leave it, and move on. Come back to it at the end when you have more time, more focus, and less panic.

    2. Use a process of elimination

This is an absolute must on any multiple choice question. There will always be one or two outrageously wrong questions. Knock them out quickly and your score doubles.

    3. Ditch language and extreme numbers

One way to pick out the wrong answers from the right ones is to look at the wording of the answers. Examiners generally prefer the correct answer to be tasteless. Any answer choice that uses words like “all,” “never,” or “always” is probably wrong. Similarly, on math and science questions, higher and lower numbers are usually bad choices too. Take them out.

    4. Identify similar responses

Another way to focus on correct answer choices is to choose all answers that look the same. Usually in the CSET exam two answers will be extreme, one will look correct and the other will be right.

The one that looks correct was put there deliberately to confuse you.

Examiners hope that as you rush through the exam, you won’t notice that there’s a better answer right next to it, and you won’t choose the wrong choice. It’s mean, but it’s doing you a favor. When two answer choices are similar, one of them is probably correct.

    5. Use previous questions

One of the advantages of long exams like the CSET is that the answer to a question is often found in another part of the test. It will be nearly impossible for reviewers not to repeat a topic or duplicate a point. If you’re scratching your head over a question, move on and keep an eye on it later. Chances are they give away the game in another question.

These are just five simple tactics you can use to pass the CSET test. There are dozens more and you’ll need them to get you in class and in front of the blackboard.
