## Getting Admitted to College – The SAT Test

Previously, every high school student wishing to go to college had to take the SAT tests. “SAT” stood for “Scholastic Aptitude Test”, intended to measure a student’s aptitude. Then it was changed to “Scholastic Assessment Test”, and in 1997 the test makers announced that “SAT” doesn’t mean anything in particular. It is now commonly referred to as the “SAT reasoning test”.

It was originally administered as a standardized testing method to give students from all socioeconomic backgrounds a chance to enter college. This was, of course, back when your parents’ alumni or financial circumstances determined whether or not one of them got into college. In the 1950s, the SAT test became a tool that colleges would use, in conjunction with a student’s GPA, to determine a student’s intelligence. Previously, it consisted of two scores: one for English/Reading and another for Math. To rival what is the closest competitor to the SAT test, the ACT test – the SAT tests now also include a writing assessment.

Each school differs in the weight they place on a student’s SAT test scores. Whether or not this is a sensible practice is a matter of great controversy in academia, as tests and studies have proven that a student’s success in college is not necessarily reflected in his or her standardized test results. In other words, it does not accurately indicate how successful or unsuccessful a student will be at that particular college. Also, students who don’t “test” well usually don’t get high scores. Also, although the test is designed to measure a student’s aptitude, it does not necessarily test what a student has learned; it is designed to test a student’s reasoning and verbal skills.

The debate ensues that a student’s reasoning and verbal skills in their freshman year of high school do not necessarily reflect the type of student they will make. If a good student typically scores lower on standardized tests compared to their peers with lower GPAs, colleges that evaluate SAT test scores may skip the most qualified student to admit the lowest performing student. While students with a high GPA (grade point average) showed higher SAT test scores, a study at Bates College measuring successful degrees proved that students with acceptable SAT test scores compared to those who didn’t. have not successfully graduated from college by a mere 1/10th percentage difference. Bates College is one of the few colleges in the United States that accepts applications without standardized test scores, basing their decision solely on grade point averages and other components.

The SAT test is administered seven times a year and costs \$50 to register. There are 5 hours allotted for the test, and until March 2009, every score (good and bad) would be sent to every college you apply to. Since March 2009, the College Prep Board has followed ACT’s policy of allowing students to submit only one of their grades; obviously, this would be the student’s highest score, omitting other scores if the student took the test more than once.

What remains the same as before is that a student’s SAT test scores are still widely used for college admission purposes. What has changed is that the ACT score is now easily accepted and weighed, just like the SAT test was, by most colleges. As of this writing, many schools accept either score. Most schools, however, still give these standardized tests significant weight in the process of elimination. Generally, students with the highest standardized test scores are more likely to be admitted to their respective colleges than students with good GPAs but lower SAT or ACT test scores.
