Six Degrees From Honest Abe

The past is not as distant as you think. It’s a subjective statement, I know, but I’m not talking about a freshman’s memory of last Christmas being perceptually relative to an octogenarian’s memory of the Eisenhower years.

No, what I mean is this: if you measure the passage of time using human life as a tailor’s tape, the present inhabitants of the Earth are not this far removed from George Washington, William Shakespeare, Pope Constantine or Jesus.

I developed this concept after playing Six Degrees of Separation with friends one night. Six Degrees is a fun little social exercise based on the assumption that every person on the planet is connected to another by no more than six people.

Socially connected, that is, like how you are connected to your neighbours, colleagues, friends and family. These are people you to know, For the best or for the worst. So if your co-worker’s husband’s former college roommate is an assistant director on the set of Officeyou’re four degrees apart from Emmy-winning actor Steve Carell.

Pretty cool, huh? I started with a bang that night, connecting by two degrees to the Beatles. A friend’s father was a well-known promoter who had worked with everyone from Elvis to Bob Dylan to Bob Hope, but it was his association with the Beatles that really impressed me. Framed photos in his office showed the father smiling proudly alongside one or another of the big celebrities, like a fisherman posing with his latest catch.

So I knew a guy who knew the Beatles and here are my two diplomas, simple as pie.

But here in the large, sprawling suburbs of the New York metro area, it’s hard do not to attach oneself by two or three degrees to the famous, the infamous, or the influential. In fact, I’d say it doesn’t matter where you reside in the United States, you should live an insular enough existence not to be connected to at least a well-known individual.

Now, I know that this premise of the Six Degrees is not specific to the famous. It’s supposed to apply to every person on the planet. But who cares if I’m connected to an Australian rancher or an Iraqi insurgent? What I want to know is how I relate to the people of influence; people who made history.

And so it was that my crowning achievement that night took shape in a flash of spontaneous insight. I had just opened a Coors Light and raised the can to my lips when I realized that our relationship was not limited to the living. I followed this thread for about forty seconds until… Eureka!

I laughed out loud at the effortless connection I had just made with one of the most important figures in American history: I am separated by six degrees and five twenty and forty-four years from the sixteenth president of our nation, Abraham Lincoln.

Hard to believe, but true as toast. There are only five humans between me and Honest Abe. All but one are no longer alive, and Theodore Roosevelt, the twenty-sixth president, is the fourth degree in that chain. Also, the key person in the equation was a member of the Kennedy administration, so JFK is just Three degrees away.

Notwithstanding Teddy Roosevelt and JFK, I thought the Lincoln connection was by far the coolest, because How? ‘Or’ What exactly is it possible to connect with a man who died in 1865?

Here’s how it works:

A friend of mine is the son of a famous Washington lawyer. In his youth, my friend’s father knew a granddaughter of Theodore Roosevelt well. This granddaughter fondly remembered her grandfather Teddy, whose first Secretary of State was Mr. John Hay; the same John Hay who, as a much younger man, had been personal secretary to Abraham Lincoln.

So I knew my buddy, my buddy knew his dad, his dad knew TR’s granddaughter, the granddaughter knew TR, TR knew Hay and Hay knew Lincoln.

Pretty weird, I thought, and my friends agreed.

On the way home that night I began to wonder who shared the planet with who at certain times in history. Did Leonardo da Vinci and Christopher Columbus live together? And Mozart and George Washington? From this line of thought emerged a “did you know? game which my children have a lot of fun with. Facts defy logic until you do the math, but once you do, the distant story seems a little less.

My grandmother, for example, was born in 1912. Anyone forty-seven or older that year had breathed the same air as the living Abraham Lincoln. And anyone over the age of eighty-six in 1912 was born when Thomas Jefferson and John Adams, our second and third presidents, still walked the earth. An elderly woman who pampers my infant grandmother might herself have been pampered as a child by an elderly John Adams. So if pampering counted as a Six Degree “connection” and my grandmother held me when I was a baby, then I could be only Three diplomas withdrawn from two signatories of the Declaration of Independence.

Against this scenario, Lincoln seems positively recent. When I came into this life in 1961, there were still people alive who were born while Lincoln was still alive. In fact, the very Last of these Lincoln-era humans didn’t transition from mortal existence until the mid-1970s, having traversed the years between gas-lit cobblestone horse-drawn carriages and car radio disco on the LA freeway.

I bet old Abe himself would agree, if he were with us today at the age of two hundred, that the past is truly do not as long as you think it doesn’t matter How? ‘Or’ What several decades back.
