Ten Great Reasons to Homeschool Your Child
1. You will be the number one influence on your child and his or her upbringing, instead of learning the latest “dirty word” or being encouraged to get a girlfriend at the ripe old age of 10.
2. This will allow you to get to know your child better as you will be with him most of the day. An average child will spend around 11,000 hours in the classroom. This doesn’t even include activities and time spent with friends. The children are young for such a short time. Why waste so much time with them?
3. You can let your child learn at their own pace, whether they are early or late. Education in a traditional school is “one size fits all”. Differences in things such as the child’s learning styles and temperament will not be considered. If your child is having trouble keeping up with their math lessons, they may be grouped with the children in the “special education” room, instead of being allowed to go up a level and relearn some things.
4. The ability to teach your religious faith and pray during your school day. Its very important. It is a proven fact that many children lose their faith when faced with a daily assault on their beliefs. Christian teenagers in interviews often report that they fell as a small, beleaguered minority in school. They often feel alone in their struggles to live by Christian values of avoiding premarital sex, risky music and videos, pornography, alcohol and drugs. Why throw your lambs to the wolves at such a young age. Keep them home for as long as possible to help build a strong foundation to weather future storms. Which brings me to #5….
5. The ability to have a say in your child’s friends. If you’ve been homeschooling for a while, you’ll seek and find like-minded families and friends. I can’t say enough about how this helped one of my most rebellious children in her ability to mature and grow through her teenage years. Her homeschooled friends are all raised with pretty much the same kinds of values, so there’s no “But mom, everyone’s watching, doing, etc.” In addition, there is “positive peer pressure” from these friends. If my son started talking about drugs or bragging about watching porn, those friends wouldn’t approve and it wouldn’t be considered cool.
6. Kinder and more agreeable children. I hate to say it, but it’s true. Strangers tell me all the time how well my kids are doing. It’s not that I’m such a good mother or that I constantly nag them about their manners (although I believe in teaching them), but it’s because of the suppression of what I calls it “the influence of the Lord of the Flies”. When children of the same age spend 6-7 hours a day together, five days a week for nine months of the year, unless they are constantly supervised and corrected by adults, their behavior can be somewhat barbaric and uncontrollable.
7. Don’t worry about bullies. Often children do not say what is happening in the classroom. The thought of a bully being mean to my little guy or stealing his glasses makes my blood boil. Why do this to your children, especially when they are young?
8. Don’t worry about sexual abuse. Much attention has been paid to sexual abuse by Catholic priests; however, the issue of sexual abuse in the public school system receives little attention and is a serious and troubling issue. Here is an article on the AP report
9. More freedom to express creativity and be yourself. Some schools encourage the arts more than others and consider the humanities expense worthwhile. My son, now 19, is an incredibly gifted artist and photographer. Being homeschooled, he had the freedom to pursue his natural talents without restriction. When he was younger, he had an affinity for drawing monsters and (especially medieval) weapons. I know for sure that his weapon designs would not be allowed or appreciated in a traditional school.
10. The opportunity to embark on a learning adventure with your children. Who knew learning could be so much fun? I hated the story because it was so boring. I remember falling asleep more than once during American History class in high school! It wasn’t until I started teaching my children at home that I became fascinated with history. What a fascinating subject!
Now, don’t get me wrong, there will be frustrating days and days when you and the kids don’t feel like “going to school” at all; however, you will have many fun and interesting learning adventures together. Imagine snuggling up on the couch every morning so you can read aloud to your kids, instead of pushing them on a bus every morning. Imagine spending a beautiful fall afternoon taking a nature walk with notebooks in hand for some observations.
Homeschooling your child will be hard work and will take effort, but the special rewards and memories you’ll earn are greater than you can imagine and will last a lifetime.
