Six Physical Education Games and Activities Your Elementary Students Will Love
The physical education games described in this article can be played at the beginning of gym class as part of a warm-up exercise, during the period totally or partially devoted to physical education games or activities, or at the end of course as part of a return to calm. exercises. In addition to the obvious benefits of providing good exercise, fighting obesity and developing motor skills, the other skills I wanted my students to demonstrate when playing these games are cooperation, sportsmanship and pleasure.
Here are 6 examples of physical education games that my students and I have enjoyed.
1. Face to face
Scatter training (possibly in a large circle) with partners. An odd numbered player stands in the center and alternates between calling “Face to Face” and “Back to Back”. Students take positions accordingly. When he calls “Everything changes”, the pupils must find new partners and the central player tries to have one too. The student left without a partner goes to the center and gives the orders. If there was no “odd student”, I also played.
2. Partner Tag
All students except two crochet arms in couples. Of the two that are free, one is “it” or the chaser and the other is the runner. The runner tries to avoid being hit by locking arms with either member of the couple of their choice. When he does, the third student in the group becomes the runner and must avoid being tagged. If the runner is tagged, the runner and fighter switch positions. To make the activity interesting, the couples have to run and twist to escape the runner. For a large number of students, there may be more than one runner and chaser.
3. Grab the cane
Have students form a circle or divide the class in half and form two circles. Each student has a number 1 at the end. One student is “it” and stands in the middle of the circle holding a cane or yardstick/meter stick with one end on the floor. This student calls one of the numbers and lets go of the cane. The student whose number has been called must catch the cane before it falls to the ground. If it fails, it becomes “It”.
Divide the class into 2 even teams (or 4 for a large class and organize two games simultaneously). Team 1 forms a circle and each member of Team 2 stands between two members of Team 1. One member of Team 1 is holding a ball (volleyball, soccer, football, etc.) and one member of team 2 is holding the same type of ball (differentiate balls, color, etc.).
At the word “go”, each teammate passes their ball to their teammate on their right (or on their left). The team that completes the full circle with their ball scores a point.
The teacher can vary the game by shouting “circle” (the student with the ball must run around the circle before passing the ball) or “zig-zag” or “bounce the ball”, etc. the idea. It’s really fun.
5. Pass and change
Arrange all but one of the students in the class in a circle about 40 feet in diameter. The student who is “it” stands in the center of the circle with a large (soft) ball.
To start, “he” calls out the names of two students in the circle and at the same time throws the ball to a third student. The two students whose names have been called, run to swap places in the circle. The third student, after catching the ball, throws it back to “her”. “It” then throws the ball at one of the two students, trying to hit one before they manage to switch places. If ‘it’ succeeds in hitting one, the student who was hit becomes ‘it’. The game starts over with the new student being “it”.
6. Fishing net
This game is played by two teams. One team is the NET and the other team is the FISH. To begin, each team stands behind a goal line at opposite ends of the pitch. The NET team chooses a captain and joins hands online. The FISH team runs free. At the signal, both teams run forward and the NET team tries to circle around as many FISH as possible. The FISH cannot duck under the NET’s arms, but if the NET lets go, the FISH can escape.
When the NET team has made their circle, the Captain counts the number of FISH that have been caught. The other team now has the turn of being the NET. These are just a few of the basic physical education activities and games that my kids have participated in during their gym time. You will find many others by visiting my website. I hope you enjoy teaching these games because your students will love them.
