Vedic Math and Engineering Students in the Year 2007
Sophisticated Indian Students Invade Ancient Vedic Mathematics Schools
Why do Indian students fall over themselves to learn Vedic mathematics? Naturally, they would be proud of India’s longstanding contributions to mathematics, but national pride aside, there are other subtle influences that drive the average student to excel.
Indian parents, however, are not at all subtle about expectations of their children. Like all parents, they want their children to enjoy the good life. An elite education, international travel, and a measure of security and wealth that comes from a successful career are the stuff of new parents’ dreams. Indian parents often make educational choices for their children even before they are born. Babies don’t know what they want. Food, a dry bottom and a cuddle before bed will do. But parents everywhere know exactly what they want for their babies.
There’s an old politically correct saying in America about doctors, lawyers, and Indian chiefs that implies that if you’re not one of them, you’re nobody. Of course, you can’t become an Indian chief unless you were born for it, so drop that idea. But you can become a doctor, a lawyer—or an engineer, the career of choice in India. And this unique concentration has created a hurdle that Indian students have to clear every year.
Frantic students jostle for available places
More than 150,000 aspiring engineers take the Indian Institute of Technology entrance exam. There are 3,500 seats.
And if you are one of the lucky ones, 4 years later you are back in the hot seat with the MBA exams. Last year, some 130,000 students fought for 1,300 places at the Indian Institute of Management.
Brutal statistics. Unless you’re some kind of genius. Or you have an ace hidden in your underwear. And that’s where Vedic math comes in.
Have you ever tried to convince your examiner to give you about an extra half hour to complete a grueling exam? I bet you don’t have anywhere. What if you could sneak in that half hour without even asking? And without cheating? Vedic math skills give you that kind of edge. No, Vedic Math does not write the exam for you. Nor does it solve complex mathematical problems on their own. But it reduces the computation time to nanoseconds. Literally.
“Of course,” you say, rolling your eyes.
“Yeah,” I retort.
Now tell me how much practice it would take you to learn this shortcut and if you would find similar tricks useful when performing large, long math problems. Suppose you need the square of 65. You can always look for a calculator. Or you can take out a pencil and calculate on a notepad. However, none of these methods will beat the competition.
The following example illustrates the simplicity of Vedic mathematical shortcuts
Let’s find the square of any number ending in 5 using Vedic Math. For example, the equation to find the square of 65 looks like this: 65×65=____.
- The answer will always end in 25. Period. So write that down on the right side of your answer space like this. 65×65=__25.
- Take the first digit, in this case the number 6, and multiply it by itself plus one (6+1). So 6x(6+1 or 7)=42.
- Write 42 before 25 in the answer space to get the full answer of 65×65=4225. Completed!
How long do you think it would take a child to do that in their head?
The thing is, anyone who knows their multiplication tables up to 9, yes, just 9, can learn this trick in minutes and never waste valuable test time again figuring out the square of a number ending in 5. This is just one of many surprisingly simple techniques for calculating in your head.
You don’t have to be Indian to pass the tough entrance exams
Now, if you are American, Canadian, French or Chinese, don’t think that this skill is only for Indian students. The competition to get into the best institutes is fierce no matter where in the world you live. Learning Vedic math tasks your mental computer. You press a mental button and the answer comes up — even faster than if you had typed the numbers into your calculator.
