Essentials of Vedic Mathematics
Vedic mathematics is an ancient form of mathematics that spreads its wings around educational systems and centers of knowledge. Interest as well as demand is growing due to its simplicity and effectiveness, offering a set of benefits.
This ancient form of mathematics originated in the Vedic era, but the system as well as the meaning of this form has been buried deep under centuries and ages. Later, Sri Bharati Krsna Tirthaji studied the Vedas, a set of ancient Hindu scriptures, from which he based a set of sutras which he believed would encompass all mathematics. The remarkable system of calculation was later rediscovered by Tirthaji from the Vedas between 1911 and 1918.
“Sutras” is a term taken from the ancient Indian language, Sanskrit, which means “thread of knowledge”. As their meaning suggests, these sutras are well described as word formulas or one-line formulas that facilitate mathematical calculations. These formulas naturally work the mind in the direction of the appropriate method of solution. It is also known as aphorisms and covers all aspects of mathematics including arithmetic, algebra, geometry, calculus, and trigonometry.
Vedic Maths works on the principle of 16 easily remembered, easily understood sutras, allowing to solve long and difficult mathematical problems quickly and efficiently. The 16 sutras are:
1. Ekadhikina Purvena: By one more than the previous one
2. Nikhilam Navatashcaramam Dashatah: All from 9 and the last from 10
3. Urdhva-Tiryagbyham: vertically and transversely
4. Paraavartya Yojayet: transpose and adjust
5. Shunyam Saamyasamuccaye: When the sum is the same, this sum is zero
6. (Anurupye) Shunyamanyat: If one is related, the other is zero
7. Sankalana-vyavakalanabhyam: By addition and by subtraction
8. Puranapuranabyham: by completion or non-completion
9. Chalana-Kalanabyham: differences and similarities
10. Yaavadunam: Regardless of the extent of his impairment
11. Vyashtisamanstih: the part and the whole
12. Shesanyankena Charamena: Leftovers by Last Digit
13. Sopaantyadvayamantyam: The Ultimate and Twice the Penultimate
14. Ekanyunena Purvena: One less than the previous one
15. Gunitasamuchyah: The product of the sum is equal to the sum of the product
16. Gunakasamuchyah: The factors of the sum are equal to the sum of the factors
Vedic mathematics has many advantages. Some of the most important advantages are its efficiency and perfection in solving all kinds of mathematical problems and calculations such as inverses, squares and square roots, cubes and cubic roots, multiple simultaneous equations, equations cubic and higher degree equations. It also helps to verify all calculations and confirm their accuracy.
Apart from these, it also plays an influential role in providing a new approach to our perspectives by enriching our knowledge and understanding of mathematics.
