Many Ways To Use Hundreds Chart
How to use the hundreds chart in first and second grade
Grade 1 students should be able to count from one to one hundred. To teach children to count to one hundred, teachers and parents can use a hundred chart.
But teacher and parents should not stop to teach one to hundred using a hundred chart but this chart can be used to explore many other basic math skills. The hundreds chart can be used to teach even and odd numbers, counting by 5s and 10s and later in second or third grade this chart can be used to introduce children to prime and compound numbers.
Once children are very familiar with counting from one to twenty, they should be introduced to the hundreds chart. In this table, the first thing to do is to ask the children to say all the numbers from one to one hundred. Once the children can say all the numbers from one to one hundred by looking at the board, parents or teachers should ask the children to say all the numbers from their memory without using the board.
When students have memorized the numbers from 1 to 100, they should use a blank hundred chart to write the numbers from 1 to 100. Once a student can fill in the entire chart using the correct numbers, the teacher or parents can use this chart, filled in by student with numbers from 1 to 100, to present that student with even and odd numbers. Have the student color all the even numbers red and color all the odd numbers blue. While coloring these numbers, even and odd numbers will be introduced into the memory of the little one.
Next, ask the students to look at the column with 5 in their place, and ask them to color those squares with the color yellow. As all of these numbers are odd numbers and have already been colored blue, when students use the color yellow on blue, these squares turn green and raise children’s interest to color them all. Now all the green squares on the chart count by fives, which is a very solid basic skill for learning the times table and other times tables.
Once the children are familiar with skip counting by fives, the next step is to have them color the squares with zeros in their place yellow. Like those even-numbered boxes, already colored red, the new color turns orange when children color yellow over red. Now all the orange squares contain all the numbers needed to learn to count by tens.
Therefore, the hundreds chart can be used in many ways to teach children numbers from 1 to 100, odd and even numbers, and skip counting skills.
