Teachers are expected to plan to the least degree for any eventuality in schools these days. Math, English, science, school trips, health and safety are scheduled with hours and hours of teacher time taken. Children’s school life is planned to within an inch of their life.
I guess there is a point to all of this. After all, when you have 30+ kids in front of you waiting to figure out what they’re supposed to do, it’s a good idea to have a little idea of how the lesson is going to turn out. How’s the saying? Failing to prepare prepares to fail and that’s pretty true in the classroom environment.
Chaos would result if you didn’t know what you were going to do with your class each lesson. Just imagine! Horrendous does not begin to describe this situation. The stress you would feel as things spiral out of control would be unimaginable!
Whose fault would it be? The answer to this question is beyond doubt! It would be the teacher’s fault, no doubt!
Why then does there seem to be so much emphasis on curriculum planning but little or no planning for managing children’s behavior?
I can hear you say, ‘Well, behavior is not something you can plan! You don’t know what’s going to happen, so how can you plan the behavior of the children…? »

It could be argued that schools have plans in place to manage behavior in the form of the school’s behavior management policy. Oh yes, sure, but I wonder how many such fonts are sitting on office shelves gathering dust? Thousands and thousands of them! They’re about as useful as the paper they’re written on!
Is this a somewhat unfair judgment? No, not really because surely if they were this effective and all staff followed their content consistently, there wouldn’t be so many behavioral issues, right?
The truth is that once a school behavior policy is written, it is virtually ignored and forgotten. It seems teachers usually wait and see what happens with the behavior of children – trying to manage once there is a crisis. They “fly away” and instead hope that bad behavior won’t happen. They do a pretty successful ostrich job rather than planning what they are going to do if or when they are faced with a behavioral problem.
Can you plan for behavior management? Yes of course you can…
It is inevitable that teachers, school leaders and classroom assistants will at some point be confronted with potentially problematic behaviors. This happens more regularly in some schools than in others. This is to be expected when you have signed up to work with children and it is the responsibility of adults to take steps to prevent behavior problems from escalating.
A measure of any adult’s success in managing children’s behavior is the preventative action taken at the point where the behavior could go wrong – what adults do to prevent a situation from escalating. The timing of the intervention is as vital as the action that is taken. It’s about preventing potentially problematic behavior from escalating into something much worse and possibly spiraling out of control.
Behavior is definitely something schools should plan for rather than what happens so regularly… This is where adults give up in despair once it all gets going. Quick and decisive action is needed when children start to misbehave – better safe than sorry!
Do not think that it is difficult to manage his behavior well, it is not! Learning to manage behavior effectively avoids a lot of long-term stress and trauma. Anyone – teacher, teaching assistant, midday supervisor – can learn how to manage child behavior and prevent most of the problems found in today’s classrooms.
