Nursing School Admissions Requirements
Admission requirements into nursing schools continue to get stricter as this profession becomes more and more competitive. As the demand for qualified nurses increases, more and more people are trying to enter this high-paying career that offers excellent benefits and job prospects. However, not only do you need to be caring, hardworking and smart to enter nursing school and complete the program, but you also need to complete a series of specific qualifications before your nursing education can even begin.
Requirements to enter nursing school
Every nursing program is different and will likely have unique requirements that set it apart from other programs. The most prestigious and popular programs usually have the strictest requirements, as you might assume. Most nursing programs require students to pass at least the Test of Essential Academic Skills, or TEAS, which will prove you have a basic understanding of English, math, and science in order to be ready for the course you will take. It is also quite common for nursing schools to require completion and passing of the Health Education Systems, or HESI, exam which covers the core health and medical subjects that most high school graduates should already have some understanding. Some colleges also require the National League for Nursing pre-admission exam.
If you are still in high school and planning to start nursing school soon after graduation, there are some steps you can take to ensure your successful application and acceptance into a good school. The Board of Registered Nursing recommends taking four years of high school English, three to four years of high school math, two to four years of high school science, and three to four years of high school social studies. At least two years of a foreign language is also helpful, although it is not mandatory.
If you’ve already graduated from high school, you can still catch up on missed classes by taking classes at a community college. In fact, many nursing students complete an associate’s degree at a community college before transferring to an accredited nursing school program, which covers all of these courses as well as some basic nursing courses. Most nursing schools require SAT or ACT scores to apply, but if you complete the associate degree first, you may not need to have completed either these tests. You will, however, need to have a clean criminal record, proof of immunizations and vaccinations, and CPR certification.
