Plagiarism – How to Find Out if Someone is Plagiarizing Your Work

With the infiltration of websites that host and propagate pseudo professional and fraudulent “writers” – even encourage it by “turning a blind eye” – there has been a significant increase in the plagiarism of copyrighted works of professional writers. Although precise figures have not yet been established, this author, after much research, estimates that it has increased by 42% in the last five years.

This not only affects professional writers but also people who hire these plagiarists to write books, articles, etc. for them. So how do you protect yourself from these secret bandits of 21st century intellectual rights? I’m glad you asked. Here are some ways:

1.) Knowing what plagiarism is is the first step to protecting yourself. So let’s define plagiarism. In very simple terms, plagiarism is when someone uses the works of others without permission. When something is created in writing, the government recognizes that property, especially when the c inside the circle symbol and the date and owner’s name are included with the piece. This means that only you have the writing to publish, print, copy or modify the piece. And anyone else must get specific permission from you to do any of those things with your work.

Now there are some nuances that you also need to know. Things like the fact that someone can include some (small) amount of your work in theirs IF they indicate the author and where it was cited from. And in most cases, that’s a good thing, because it helps promote your works, if the quotes are used in a good light. There are limits to what a person can cite. Also, just because someone rearranges the order of words or sentences doesn’t mean they’re not exempt from copyright laws. You can read more about these things and more on the Western Connecticut State University website at the following link: http://library.wcsu.edu/web/about/policies/plagiarism/#question-1. You will learn a lot about plagiarism.

2.) If you are someone who hires writers, especially for books or articles, avoid cheap writers and stick with the professionals. When it comes to services, considering hiring a cheap writer is just asking for failure and even serious trouble. Unlike buying durable goods, like clothes, basketballs and grass for your garden, you can’t seek professional services in the same way – whether you’re looking for drafting services, a good lawyer for you represent or someone to put new brakes on your car. .

You might be able to strike a deal on the brakes themselves, although this could have serious ramifications, is it worth changing things up on shoddy or inferior craftsmanship? How about saving a few bucks on a super cheap lawyer and as a result, you’ll still end up having to pay a big fine or, even worse, be sent to jail for something you didn’t do? Would it be a good deal? What if you were to fulfill your life’s dream of having a book published, but ended up with something that even your loving mother or grandmother couldn’t think of anything nice to say about it? The answer is that it’s just NEVER the right thing to do when it comes to services.

HERE’S MY POINT: The biggest example of plagiarism comes from pseudo-professional writers. And of the estimated 42% increase mentioned above, 40% comes from those same writers. In fact, I don’t even like to call them writers, because they don’t fit the bill in any way. In fact, they taint an otherwise honest, hardworking and professional field. So if you feel some of my feelings of anger, such feelings are rightly simmering.

For example, I received a 350-page book from a client who needed professional book publishing services. He mentioned that he paid a writer $4,000 to write it. After I stopped choking myself, I politely told her that there was no doubt in my mind that there was something wrong with her book.

I started editing this “book” and soon after I could tell there were two different voices. This suggested that there had been two different writers, which raised two red flags that things weren’t encouraging for my client.

To make a long article short, I investigated and discovered that 45% of this book had been plagiarized verbatim! My client was a businessman with a good reputation. And if I hadn’t understood that, his business and his reputation could have been seriously damaged. Not to mention what could have happened to his life over the legal ramifications.

But it took a professional to find it. And it takes professionals to write, edit, proofread, format, market and print books and articles of any quality. Staying away from the cheap writer is essential for all but ensures that you won’t face plagiarism issues. What is low cost? Well, be careful what someone offers you. This plagiarized book for my client, who incidentally still works with me to this day on his books in progress, took about 8 months to write at $4,000. If you do the math, you can see that this “writer” was making about $115 a week. How can a full-time professional writer make a living out of it? It’s below the poverty line. Using this system can therefore be very useful. If someone offers you poverty rates to write your book or your article, what does that tell you? For one thing, they’re not very good writers if they have to stoop so low financially to find work.

Also, know that a 350-page book should take at least 12 months to write to be accurate, professional, and of high quality. So if someone offers you such a book in 6 months, run the other way. Stealing the works of others is the only way to achieve this. Additionally, professional writers earn between $100 and $250 per page. This is a very good rule of thumb.

3.) If you’re a writer or someone who hires one and you have work you’d like to see if someone uses parts of it without permission, there’s something you can do online. Go to plagiarismchecker.com and type more than 6 and less than 32 words – verbatim – from a passage in your book or article and click the “Search” button. If something is on the Internet, links will appear in the resulting web page to websites that contain your intellectual property. Keep doing this with different sections of your book or article. The more you include (up to 32 words), the better, as it more accurately detects only sites containing your specific work. There are other similar checkers online, such as http://www.neilstoolbox.com/plagiarism-tester/. This allows you to type up to 50 words at a time.

While this is an extremely effective way to catch bandits online, it’s not foolproof, as of course it doesn’t cover offline jobs (brick & mortar).

I will continue to research ways to protect ourselves against misrepresentation of written works. If you know of any other ways to check for plagiarism, feel free to share them with me and I’ll add them to this article and share this information – with your permission, of course – with the rest of the world, and we’ll all be a little better for it.
